Popping candy cupcakes - toppings

I was thinking of different idea's for my cupcakes, and i scribbled a few idea's down.
Although all the cupcake idea's i'd thought of were great and delicious, i wanted something fun, something that i use to like as a kid.
I had a stroll around town, and came across a new sweet shop that had opened up not so long ago. Then sell alot of old fashioned sweets, so i browsed the shelves inside, and came across something perfect for a topping........popping candy!!
I use to love popping candy when i was younger, and i loved the noise and feel of the crackling the candy made in my mouth.
I bought a couple of flavours (Cola, Cherry & strawberry) and a few packets of the colour changing popping candy (the colour changing popping candy is bigger, and is better if you want to use it in your cupcake mixture.)

With popping candy, you already have sweet flavour, so with the buttercream for your cupcakes, it's better to keep it simple. I used 175g icing sugar, 75g butter & 2 tsp milk.
Once you have baked your cupcakes, let them cool, pipe on your buttercream, and then just sprinkle your popping candy on top! (or you can add the popping candy to your buttercream mixture, but this does sometimes make the popping candy less.....crackling.)

  1. I would absolutely love to make some cakes with popping candy on top for my cub group - can you please tell me if it will lose its 'fizz' if I make it the day before? Thanks!!
